Quadro Nuevo - End Of The Rainbow (2013)
MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 13 Tracks | 77:04 | 176 MB
Genre: Jazz, World, Tango, Musette | Label: Fine Music

Though based in Germany, acoustic jazz quartet Quadro Nuevo devoted its creative energies to resurrecting the fading musical traditions of Europe as a whole, in particular embracing the tango. Guitarist Robert Wolf, reedist Mulo Francel, accordionist Andreas Hinterseher, and bassist D.D. Lowka co-founded Quadro Nuevo in Salzburg in 1996. Originally commissioned to write and produce film music for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, the four musicians immediately bonded over their eclectic musical backgrounds and shared affection for nostalgia, and in the decade to follow they played more than 1,500 live dates across the continent, forging an alchelmical acoustic sound from elements of flamenco, Balkan swing, traditional folk, and avant-garde improvisation. Issuing their debut album, Luna Rossa, in 1998, ...

A strangely wonderful album from Marion Brown – quite different from his other work on Impulse, with a mellow electric edge that gives it a warm and laidback feel! The approach here is much more soulful than before – with finely crafted tunes that weave Brown's work on alto with electric piano by Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell, percussion by Ed Blackwell and Jimmy Hopps, and bass by Reggie Workman. If you're expecting the angrier Brown from earlier years, you'll be disappointed – but if you're ready to hear a Brown that's gently crafting mellow lines in a soulful setting, then you're in for a treat. Tracks include Cowell's "Maimoun", Stevie Wonder's "Visions", Brown's "Vista", "Moment of Truth", "Bismillah Rrahimani Rrahim", and "Djinji".

Sidney Bechet - Les Jazz RTL: American Jazz in Paris (2009)
MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 3 CDs - 60 Tracks | 3:03:10 | 432 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: Vogue Europe

Bechet made several outstanding albums in France, mostly with Claude Luter's orchestra. On this one, he plays soprano sax much more than clarinet. The arrangements are outstanding, and the sound quality is special. No Bechet fan (or clarinet/sax fan) should be without this! Sidney Bechet needs no introduction to lovers of traditional New Orleans jazz. Like many African-American musicians, he found a deeper recognition in Europe, and so settled in France and made many recordings during the 1950's for the French Vogue label. These have now been collected, remastered and reissued on a French release by Sony Legacy. It's good to have this available through Amazon. Essential for any collector of traditional jazz...

Think!, organist Lonnie Smith's 1968 sophomore effort for Blue Note, is easily one of the strongest dates the Hammond B-3 master would produce for the label. Featuring a stellar group of musicians including trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist David Newman, guitarist Melvin Sparks, and drummer Marion Booker, Jr., as well as a three-member Afro-Latin percussion unit led by Henry "Pucho" Brown, Think! is a perfect mix of funky soul and forward-thinking jazz. Kicking things off with Hugh Masekela's instantly memorable "Son of Ice Bag," both Sparks and Newman take searching funk-flow solos while Morgan seems to be remembering a certain Masekela lick he dug.

This is a 24 bit remastering of an album that Doggett cut for ABC/Paramount in 1965. If you only know his "King" material then you'll find that this is very different, and very much a small group effort, with Doggett filling rather than leading for much of the album. He's helped by having a very solid horn section ( special mention for Andrew Ennis who was to go on to play with Ray Charles) and also Billy Butler playing some tasty guitar licks.

At the peak of her career, Helen Forrest was the most popular female singer in the United States. Because of her work with the bands of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James, she is known as “the voice of the name bands” and is regarded by some as the best female vocalist of the swing era. In addition Forrest as “a performer that some might not consider a jazz vocalist, but one with exceptional ability to project lyrics and also an excellent interpreter.” Also, IMDb describes Forrest: “though Helen was not, perhaps, a jazz singer in the truest sense, she brought to her songs a wistful ‘girl-next-door’ quality” through her “femininity and warmth of her voice and the clear, emotional phrasing of her lyrics.”

A broad-thinking musician with a prolific and extensive back catalog of releases - from duo and chamber to big band formats, from West African to North Indian collaborations - renowned Washington DC-born guitarist and composer Joel Harrison now turns his attention to a quintet recording featuring the intriguing front line of trumpet (Cuong Vu) and bassoon (Paul Hanson). Completed by NYC bassist Kermit Driscoll (bass) and the influential eminence of drummer Brian Blade, Harrison has created a genuine improvisers' record with a conceptual focus very much on the intuitive skills of these specific players.

Released by AUM Fidelity as a double CD in 2010, I Plan to Stay a Believer is bassist William Parker's heart and soul tribute to vocalist and songwriter Curtis Mayfield. Parker, an extraordinarily resourceful improviser and internationally respected leader of creative ensembles, joyously celebrates the interwoven traditions of African-American musical culture by saluting an artist whose best works still define an entire mode of positive, uplifting musical expression. Mayfield rose to prominence with Jerry Butler and the Impressions in the late ‘50s, helped that group to become mainstays of Chicago soul throughout the ‘60s, and achieved superstar status in his own right during the early ‘70s.

MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 19 Tracks | 59:34 | 138 MB

It’s hard not to like Pam Lawson. As the audience is greeted by the soft, languid rendition of “I Won’t Dance” as they file in, Lawson meets them like old friends with a big smile and easy manner, setting the tone for the next hour. This show lives up to it’s subtitle as A Celebration In Song, and is an opportunity for the singer to share her love of the music from the classic 1930s films of Fred and Ginger. Interspersed with a witty narrative of anecdotes gleaned from autobiographies by the iconic Hollywood pair, Pam Lawson takes us through the music from the nine RKO Radio Pictures movies featuring the dancing duo. On a blank stage and backed brilliantly on piano by Tom Finlay, and on double bass by Ed Kelly, Pam Lawson, in a flowery tea-dress, invites the audience to sing along or even dance if they dare. With the house...

Depending on when you walk in on a song, Emma Frank's music might sound like folk or jazz, even R&B. It's music that never stays put, full of moving parts, shifting tempos, winding melodies. Often compared to Joni Mitchell for her risk-taking and sincere songwriting, Emma's music belongs to the new generation of jazz vocalists and songwriters like Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens or Aoife O'Donovan.

A great live set from Sadao Watanabe – one that shows the wealth of influences he'd been drawing on, from post-Coltrane spirituality, to African-oriented rhythms, to a slight bit of funk! The group's great – with Watanabe on flute, alto, and soprano sax, Takehiro Honda on Fender Rhodes and piano, Kazumi Watanabe on guitar, plus added bass, trombone, and percussion – and we especially like Honda's keyboards, which make any session like this an instant treat! The album's got a warm, soulful feeling, but a sharper edge than most of Watanabe's smoother work of the time – and titles include "Hiro", "Maraica", "Wana Tanzania", and "Mathari Terbenam".

Most of the music on this four-CD set from 1997 has been reissued many times, both on LP and CD, but this is the most "complete" set thus far. Louis Armstrong recorded for RCA during two separate times. During 1932-1933, he led an erratic (and under-rehearsed) big band on a series of numbers, but all of the selections have their moments of interest. Although not up to the level of his Hot Five and Seven recordings of five years earlier, these spirited tracks find Armstrong mostly in excellent form both instrumentally and vocally, and the reissue has four alternate takes never released before.
